We had a successful members’ social meeting in January when we discussed our current activities in a relaxed environment with light refreshments provided and the bar open for drinks. Around 25 members were present. The venue was Club Derwent. We did have one member complain beforehand that it was inappropriate for the Civic Trust
to be ‘patronising’ premises owned by the Conservative Party. Indeed we are a non-political organisation and are very protective of this. However, we need to use facilities that are available to us and there was no charge for the hire of the room. Furthermore, we are not a religious organisation but have utilised religious facilities for our activities for a long time, including the Friends Meeting House and the United Reformed Church. Following this success, we have decided to trial separating this year’s AGM from the lecture evening and holding it in a social environment in September along
with a couple of presentation/discussion topics that are topical for our town.
