In the early 1970’s the need for a civic centre was discussed but the difficulty was finding a suitable affordable building. At the beginning of 1990 Allerdale District Council announced that it was going to demolish the unused former All Saints School and the Trust saw this as the opportunity they had been waiting for. After much negotiation the building was acquired by the Trust and handed in 1993 over to a new independent trust called the Kirkgate Centre Trust. It is considered by many as the Civic Trust’s best achievement.
